A Rainy Day in Lexington

The painting is a scene in downtown Lexington, circa 1898 which is the only known work by Sawyier set in Lexington. Included are the front steps of the old U.S. Custom House and Post Office that was located at Main and Walnut, with a harness shop next door. Figures in the scene include a mailman, lady and child, and newspaper boy approaching a couple. Similar to “A Rainy Day in Frankfort”, in the distance is shown a horse and buggy.
