South Hill Gallery - Award Winning Frame Designers The Kentucky/Tennessee Chapter of the Professional Picture Framers Association held their annual framing competition in October in Lexington, KY. South Hill Gallery entered both the Print and Open Framing Competition and won FIRST PLACE in both categories! We were also honored to win the Popular Choice vote and a Judges Award for our Open Framing entry as well. The competition was held at Joseph Beth Booksellers and the pieces were on public display for their patrons to view and cast votes for Popular Choice. Displayed are our ribbons, as we cannot post pictures of the pieces themselves until after the International Competition, which will be held in February, 2010 in Anaheim, CA. However, if you come by South Hill Gallery you can see the pieces on display and have your framing projects completed by a frame shop that truly has "Award Winning" frame designers! |

From The Gallery to South Hill Gallery 1977 to 2010 “The Gallery” was originally established in 1971 by Harriett Cooper on South Ashland Avenue, to serve the Lexington area. James Clemons purchased The Gallery in 1977 with the goal to broaden his customer base and serve the Central Kentucky area. To accommodate his growing market, Mr. Clemons moved the business to 600 South Broadway in 1979, where it remained until 2009. After a successful 24 years, Mr. Clemons chose to retire and sold the business to Michael Drury, who had worked previously as the Manager of The Gallery since 1994. Michael began his experience with the framing and art industry in 1985, opening Michael’s Custom Framing in Versailles, Kentucky. In 1991, he sold that still thriving framing business to pursue other interests in wholesale framing. Michael began to miss the hands on side of industry he loved and came back to work at The Gallery as Manager. In 2001, Michael purchased The Gallery, began to study various aspects of conservation framing practices and branched out to show more local and original art. Over the past few years The Gallery has evolved from a custom frame shop selling limited edition prints into a gallery that shows unique and original art from all over the U. S. and abroad.
In 2005, Michael gained a partner, in life and business, when he and Letha were married. Together, they have a synergistic relationship that fosters a creative spirit and warmth for their loyal customers, who are often like family. Michael and Letha are both officers in the Kentucky/Tennessee Chapter of the Professional Picture Framer’s Association (PPFA). In 2006 Michael was awarded the prestigious Certified Picture Framers (CPF) designation. This designation was granted after meeting rigorous qualifications, including successful completion of a 3˝ hour, 150 question examination on all aspects of running a framing business, with an emphasis on conservation framing. The Drury’s also are supporters of Local First Lexington and the Lexington Art League. We are experts in the conservation framing of your quality artwork. You can expect professional design assistance, and the skilled crafting of your piece is done on-site. In honor of our 30th anniversary in 2007, we changed our name to “South Hill Gallery” to reflect our history in the South Hill district. In April of 2009, South Hill Gallery moved to their new location at 1401 Versailles Road to offer their loyal clients more services, expanded parking and a convenient location. In addition to their love of art and custom framing, Michael loves to play music and Letha serves as Deacon at Midway Baptist Church. |

Thank you for choosing to support a locally owned business! Buying local is good for Lexington: - Keep your dollars in the Lexington economy. For every $100 spent at locally owned businesses, $68 stays in our city, helping to create good jobs. In the case of chain stores, only $43 stays in the community.
- Keep Lexington unique. Locally owned, independent businesses are what set Lexington apart from Anytown, USA, and help attract tourism as well as new residents.
- Preserve the landscape. Lexington's pride is the Bluegrass landscape. Unlike most local stores, national big-box chains are synonymous with suburban sprawl and loss of this precious resource.
- Invest in entrepreneurship. Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community.
- Create more choice. Having more smaller shops rather than fewer big ones means a wider range of product choices, tailored to the needs and preferences of Lexington shoppers.
