From “The Gallery” to “South Hill Gallery” - 1977 to 2017 - Celebrating 40 years in business

“The Gallery” was originally established in 1971 by Harriett Cooper on South Ashland Avenue, to serve the Lexington area.  James Clemons purchased The Gallery in 1977 with the goal to broaden his customer base and serve the Central Kentucky area.  To accommodate his growing market, Mr. Clemons moved the business to 600 South Broadway in 1979, where it remained until 2009.  After a successful 24 years, Mr. Clemons chose to retire and sold the business to Michael Drury, who had worked as the Manager of The Gallery since 1994.

Michael Drury, Master Certified Picture Framer

Michael began his experience with the framing and art industry in 1985, opening Michael’s Custom Framing in Versailles, Kentucky.  In 1991, he sold that still thriving framing business to pursue other interests in wholesale framing.  Michael began to miss the hands-on side of industry he loved and came back to work at The Gallery as Manager.   In 2001, Michael purchased The Gallery, began to study various aspects of conservation framing practices and branched out to show more local and original art.  Over the past few years The Gallery has evolved from a custom frame shop selling limited edition prints into a gallery that shows unique and original art from all over the U. S. and abroad.

Mike and Letha join forces in 2005

In 2005, Michael gained a partner, in life and business, when he and Letha were married.  Together, they have a synergistic relationship that fosters a creative spirit and warmth for their loyal customers, who are often like family.  Michael and Letha are both officers in the Kentucky/Tennessee Chapter of the Professional Picture Framer’s Association (PPFA). In 2006 Michael was awarded the prestigious Certified Picture Framers (CPF) designation and in 2013 he became a Master Certified Picture Framer (MCPF),  the highest level of certification available.   Michael has also been elected to the National Board of Directors of the Professional Picture Framer's Association.

In honor of our 30th anniversary in 2007, we changed our name to “South Hill Gallery” to reflect our history in the South Hill district.   In April of 2009, South Hill Gallery moved to their new location at 1401 Versailles Road to offer their loyal clients more services, expanded parking and a convenient location.  In January, 2011 South Hill Gallery merged with Photo Therapy, providing complete photographic printing services along with custom framing, under one roof.

In addition to their love of art and custom framing, Michael loves to play music and Letha has served as Deacon at Midway Baptist Church.  When not framing they enjoy the company of Bonnie and Sophie, their Boston Terriers, as well as cooking on the Big Green Egg!

Accident on April 20, 2014

On Easter Sunday, April 20th a car hit the front of our building causing catastrophic damage to the structure and contents. By the following Friday we were open using our rear entrance and spent the next three months repairing the damages caused  by this irresponsible act. Then, and especially now, we are filled with gratitude that this happened on a quiet Sunday evening, no one was hurt and nothing was lost that couldn't be replaced. We are back now, better than ever in our newly remodeled space!

A recent customer review on Merchant Centric (8/2013):

This is definitely one of the best framing/photo "repair/therapy" businesses in the Lexington area, the best for service and price I have ever experienced. I used them five years ago to frame some photos and was totally satisfied; this time I brought in a very old photo that needed special care. They shared their expertise, showed me options and actually advised me to take a less expensive option than I initially asked for - in order to best preserve my vintage sports photo. A good family owned business that knows their stuff and takes pride in their work. And fast turn around for service!

Michael Drury Receives Coveted MCPF Designation - 2013

The Professional Picture Framer’s Association (PPFA) recently awarded Michael Drury, Co-owner of South Hill Gallery, the Master Certified Professional FramerÒ (MCPF) designation. Michael joins only one other framer in Kentucky and 60 framers worldwide who have attained the highest level of proficiency measured by the PPFA.   Michael presented four framed works, with an emphasis on preservation framing of various media, to the panel of judges that were disassembled, inspected and scored.  Passing that portion of the test, Drury had 90 minutes to complete a randomly selected framing project using preservation framing methods.  The MCPF exam measures not only the knowledge of the framer, but their ability to execute a design with skill and precision.

“At South Hill Gallery we are very serious about how we preserve and present the art of our customers,” says Drury.  “We value professional development through our association that provides education on best practices available in our industry.” Michael, along with his wife Letha, regularly participate in local and national frame design competitions, as well as host PPFA Chapter meetings at their shop.  Michael was elected to the national Board of Directors of the PPFA in January of 2013.

“Our customers love the experience of bringing in their art for frame design at our shop, but they are also reassured that we are using the best possible conservation practices on their piece – whether it’s their child’s drawing, grandmother’s needlework or a Picasso!” For more information visit their website at www.southhillgallery.com
